PROJECT-Modelling the chain pin.pulley contact in CVT transmissions
The research aim at describing the actual lubrication regime between the pin and the chain and investigate the influence of surface roughness, lubricant properties, pin geometry. The project was funded by the dutch company Gear Chain Industrial B.V. Neunen – The Netherlands for a total amount of 66k€. The project involved also JTEKT – Corporation Japan

Theoretical investigation of the physical mechanism behind the enhanced adhesion of mushroom-shaped microstructures are being carried out to streamline optimisation of super-adhesive glue-free surfaces for industrial applications.

PROJECT-Experimental investigation of Micro-EHL in soft contacts

Experimental investigation of lubricated steady-sliding contact of soft solids is being carried out to show that the anisotropic character of the surface roughness has a strong influence in determining the transition from boundary lubrication to the hydrodynamic regime. Tests have been carried out using a ball-on-flat test configuration to measure the friction coefficient at the contact between a smooth steel ball and a rough PDMS as a function of the sliding speed. The most noteworthy first outcome of the research is that the presence of roughness anisotropy strongly modifies the classical shape of the Stribeck curve as a consequence of local micro-EHL conditions which occur at the contact interface.
