Luciano Afferrante - Biography

Luciano Afferrante is assistant professor in Mechanical design at the Politecnico di Bari since 2011. He graduated cum laude in Mechanical Engineering at the Politecnico di Bari in 2001 and he registered as professional engineer in 2002. In 2006 he got a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the Politecnico di Bari by discussing the thesis "Thermo-ElastoDynamic Instability in sliding contact". He spent various periods of time to study and perform research as: visiting PhD student at the University of Shieffield; visiting PhD student at the University of Leeds; visiting PhD student at the University of Michigan; visiting PhD student at the University of Leicester; visiting scientist at the University of Cambridge. He has taught different courses in Mechanical Design at the Politecnico di Bari and Università del Molise. He regularly does activities of peer review for numerous international scientific journals. He has published about 70 works between international journals and international and national conferences.

Comments on his PhD Thesis:

 - “In general the thesis is of high quality. It is well structured, clearly written, and answers novel and important questions.…….The thesis is, as mentioned above, a very impressive work. However, it is even more impressive that Afferrante has written 9 journal papers that are not included in the thesis.

 - “This work gives an interesting discussion on the phenomenon of friction-induced instabilities of solids when inertia forces and thermal equations are taking into account. ……… The mathematical analyses as well as the numerical simulations are well discussed. The derived results are new and really original. There are matters for several publications in international journals. The reviewer has much appreciated the maturity of the redaction and the rigor of the mathematical arguments. In conclusion, this work is an outstanding PhD thesis.

 - “This thesis introduces a hitherto unknown category of frictional instability associated with the interaction of thermal expansion and elastodynamics. The potential applications of this mechanism are enormous, ranging from earthquakes through mechanical engineering components to nanoscale friction mechanisms. For this contribution alone, the thesis is worthy of the PhD degree. In addition, I notice that Mr. Afferrante has published or had accepted several papers in the premier peer-reviewed journals in the Mechanics field…..…….

 - “……….the thesis is well written and the materials covered are more than enough as a Ph.D. thesis by the standard in any US institution.  Therefore, my impression is that Italian institutions set higher standard than US institutions for graduating PhDs. I have been trying hard to make some constructive suggestions and comments about this work but I have failed simply because the thoughtfulness of the author……………

2010 (November-December) – research contract from DIMeG - Dipartimento di Ingegneria Meccanica e Gestionale (Politecnico di Bari) on the topic: "Characterization of tribological and superhydrorepellent properties of micro- and nano-structured surfaces by finete elements tecniques".

RESEARCH INTERESTS

Scientific research areas in the field of tribology: (i) rolling contact fatigue; (ii) frictional Thermo Elastic (TEI) and Thermo Elastic-Dynamic Instability (TEDI); (iii) corrugation of railway; (iv) superhydrorepellence and adhesion of micro-structured surfaces; (v) contact of rough surfaces. Other research interests: fracture from cracks and biomechanics of the aortic valves.
