Rosa Di Mundo - Biography

Rosa Di Mundo graduated with honors in Chemistry in 2002 at the Aldo Moro University of Bari with a thesis on plasma modifications of filtering materials. In the period 2003-2006 in the same University she carried out a funded PhD course in Chemistry of Innovative Materials within the group of prof. Riccardo d’Agostino. In the frame of the PhD thesis, entitled “Plasma deposition of silicon nitride-like thin films with dimethylaminosilane precursors”, she investigated innovative methods for the deposition of nitride coatings from cold plasmas with focus on the correlations between plasma phase and deposited solids. For this purpose she used various techniques, such as optical emission spectroscopy (OES), FT-Infrared absorption spectroscopy (FT-IRAS), X-ray electron spectroscopy (XPS), as well as, co-working with a group at Siena University, the Secondary Ions Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) with multivariate analysis.

From 2007 to 2012, in the same group as post-doc fellow, she worked on national and european projects, dealing with plasma nano-texturation of material surfaces, mostly polymers, and explored chemical/morphological features of the modified surfaces and the resulting optical and wetting properties. In particular, she deeply investigated the exstreme states of wetting (superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity) and the potentialities of the Contact Angle Goniometry (CAG) for wetting characterization under static, dynamic, condensation conditions. For the results obtained in this field she has received international awards and invitations to international conferences.

In 2013 she moved to the Polytechnique University of Bari to join the group of prof. Giuseppe Carbone. Here she has taken the opportunity of combining her expertise on fabrication and characterization of superhydrophobic surfaces with the group background in quantitative analysis of rough profiles and tribological material characterization.

Since October 2015 she has been appointed as assistant professor in materials science and technology (SSD Ing-Ind/22) at the Polytechnique University of Bari within the “future in research program”.
